IN LOVING MEMORY

HENRY G. ATKINSON

MARCH 28, 1939 – SEPTEMBER 5, 2024

Henry Gerald Atkinson died peacefully at his home on September 5, 2024 surrounded by his

family after a courageous eight year battle with Parkinson’s disease.

Henry was born in Fayetteville, NC on March 28, 1939 to parents James Marshall Atkinson and

Eunice Morris Atkinson. He was predeceased by his parents and brothers, James Marshal

Atkinson, Jr. and John Franklin Atkinson.

Henry graduated from Fayetteville High School and enlisted in the Navy where he proudly

served his country for ten years. Following his time in the Navy Henry graduated from Calhoun

Engineering School in Baltimore, Maryland and entered the Merchant Marines sailing for over

twenty seven years and achieving the rank of Chief Engineer.

Henry’s career took him to ports all over the world including Germany, Romania, Peru, Chili,

South Africa, Egypt, India, Turkey, Israel and Kenya. He took pleasure in having the opportunity

to meet the people and experience the culture and food of each location.

Henry was a man who delighted in simple pleasures. He loved fishing, playing with his dogs,

telling sea stories, savoring NC BBQ, and was an avid reader, especially of history. Most of all,

Henry loved his family. He was a strong anchor for all when the seas of life became rough.

Henry believed in doing the right thing simply because it was the right thing – not easy or

convenient but right. He would help anyone he could and always offered a quick word of

encouragement or hope. Henry was a true southern gentleman always keeping his word when

he gave it.

Henry is survived by his wife of forty three years, Barbara, his daughter, Julie, and his four

granddaughters, Danielle, Tianna, Jhiera and Navayah.

Henry will be deeply missed but his memory fills our hearts with deep and lasting gratitude.
